The triple Ds we are referring to are: Detect, Defuse and Defend. These are crucial tools in your self defense arsenal. They were developed by Tony Blauer of S.P.E.A.R. tactics and embody a simplistic, yet crucial element of self defense training. By following the triple D’s you can take back control of your own personal self defense.

Detect
The definition is to “bring into awareness.” Unfortunately, most of us spend our time distracted and not paying attention to our surroundings. Being aware of your surroundings is not designed to make you paranoid, but to add a reflexive skill to your arsenal. If you are aware of your surroundings and paying attention, you are more likely to recognize the subtle danger signals from predators. This provides you with a tactical advantage when it comes to the next step – defuse.
Defuse
The definition is “to make something less dangerous.” This can be as simple as moving out of range (across the street, out of the bar, etc.) or more involved using verbal de-escalation. The key here is to try to defuse the situation, much like a bomb, so that you can remove yourself from the conflict without having to move to defend.
Defend
Defend is defined as “taking action to protect.” It is pretty straightforward and not just limited to reactive physical interaction. Defend can also mean – escape where possible or proactive physical engagement with your aggressor – i.e. throwing the first shot.
Triple Ds are a great guideline for triaging a potentially dangerous situation. The goal of any effective self defense program is not to have to engage physically, but to be able to recognize potential danger and take the necessary evasive actions to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim. And if that is impossible, being able to physically defend yourself.
